Face Interview with Confidence

Prepare for Successful Personnel Interview.

Facing a successfully personnel interview is the dream of any MBA aspirants. Students prepare for Group Discussion and personnel interview a lot. The preparations are the key for a successfully personnel interview. Read on to find how to face personnel interview in various MBA exams. While taking the interview in various admission processes I feel the need to prepare for following are 15 important areas. Read on to find more …..

1. Characteristics of an Influential Students: There are few students who are the dream for interviewer. They behave and answer as interviewer wants to listen. This is the results of good preparation. I don’t think they answer every question as expected. Some students with strong academic and social background actually run the interview. They actually control the interview. From the first question like ‘Tell me something about your self?’ to the last question they actually tells the Interviewer, what they must ask next. Because it is the common known fact that neat question comes from your last answer.Students must know what to answer and which way they have answered to control the interview in effective way. Students must know their positive points and their negative points, so that they will be able to answer it effectively.

2. Money Vs Career Goals:

Interviewer will always ask for your short and long term goals. Interviewers always expect that you should have a clear vision of short and long term goals. I remember when a student during the interview answer that I am not an astrologer to know what will happen to me after 20 years. Students must have a clear idea about their long term goals. They must know what they will do after 20 to 25 years. You must always know what you want to do in which sector and area.

Your short term goals may be targeted towards 3-5 years. Always there is confusion between giving importance to money or career goals. Mostly student clearly says that “earning money is their goal”. You can earn the money even without having the goal also but you can earn more money with a goal because it will have your interest and perfection in the field. Your interest in the subjects like Biotechnology, Engineering, Science and Information Technology brings your short and long term goals. This interest must have more impact on the goal compared to money. You must be able to say it in the interview and prove that your goals are more important than the money.

3. Synchronization in talks: Many a times the interview for admission in the Business School is taken by Senior Professors and Senior Alumni. Most of the times, the speed of talk differs between a younger boy appearing for the Interview and the most senior old age person taking the interview. Students must keep pace with the speed of talk of the Interviewer.

4. Body Language & Behavior: During many interviews, I have seen how body languages of students have deep impacts of their roots like their families, their culture, their area and their family history. Students have to read their own style of sitting on the chair, talking style and stress level and try to fill the gap between the actual and required. Mostly girls are more calm and sweet in talks which interviewers like so much. Girls are more particular and they tend to be more stable while talking compared to boys.

5. Impact of the age & Background of the Interviewer: Mostly interviewer is a Senior Professors who has taught to thousands of students. They are well aware of behaviour and tactics of students. If the interviewer is of more then 50 years of age, his experience and background will be vast. Background of interviewer is also a major factor because the style and the questions will have its effects. The interviewer may belongs to different category like General Management, Information Technology, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relationship Management, Marketing, Static, Insurance, H.R. or any other such field. It is better if student comes to know about the age and the background of interviewer.

6. Interviewers personal opinion about the type of students: Interviewer being a human being has personal opinion about girls, boys and students from different geographical areas, students with or without work experience. Students with Engineering or Non-Engineering Degree and students with good or bad written score depending upon their past experience they think that girls are more prepared compared to boys. Sometimes, they think that Engineering students are more suitable for management education. It all depends on their personal experiences. What you need to do is to find their opinion and try to fit in their frame. You study your past well like you belong to engineering or commerce background, how many students are there of your area of specialization in that college and then try to be like them reading a lot about those areas.

7. Ambitions, Objectives and Goals: Every human whether he does MBA or not have his/her ambitions. Even children’s when they see Zen Car or Bike going have ambition that they will some day purchase this car/bike. Naturally, the students coming for MBA personal interview must have some dream in his mind, Question is how you can tell it to the Interviewers.

In Personal Interview, you must be clear in your mind about your goal, about your objectives and ambitions. A development hungry mind always thinks of a better place or better opportunity to grab. Interviewers will always want to check that inner thrust on you.

You must be clear about long and short term goal. You must be clear about your dream profile job and about your dream company where you want to work. You must be clear about your long term goal and your career ambitions.

Sometimes students love one particular job profile so much that they will not look at the money. You should always be behind your ambition, and your goals must not be money oriented.

8. Confidence/Overconfidence:

Students appearing for Personal Interview must be confident enough to answer each question. There is very thin line between confidence and overconfidence. Student should always sit with down shoulders & give respect to the panel members. Your confidence or overconfidence will be demonstrated by three things:

1. Body Language

2. Voice Level

3. Sitting Style.

All these three things will have the effect of your background. Body Language and Level of Voice will have a clear indication of your family and professional background.

9. Information Availability: During many interviews, one came across different types of students. They are from strong financial background; they are from remote geographical location. Some times, they are from strong professional families or sometimes they are from uneducated families.

I have concluded that availability of information is the key factor. If the student belongs to a family where one or two members are already MBA or they belong to a College from where most of the students do MBA have more possibility of performing best in Personal Interview. The students with less exposure to the management positions, non-availability of information on GD & PI, non-availability of the tactics used for best performance, non-availability of study information on material, non-availability of current topics are the important reasons.

10. High profile students and their qualities:

During the interviews, I came across many students who have work experience in top Indian companies. They have international exposure with their companies or families. Such students relatively perform better as compared to other students due to their high profile exposure. They work with international units in their company usually one or two persons handling the management issues are MBA from top Indian Business Schools through which they get exposure.

11. Leadership questions and the answer:

As you are getting the admission for Management degree, interviewer always expects knowledge of Management and the Manager. They expect that you should know what are the responsibility of a manager, qualities require for a good manager, importance of patience, negotiation and communication skills. Sometimes, students must have ready answers to prove that they have all these qualities. While answering such questions, your mind must be in a stable condition and you need to have enough patience.

The only key to success is preparedness. You must be hundred percent dedicated to preparedness. You need to learn and face the things that you don’t know or don’t have.

12. Remember your past

Most of the times, the flow of interview is decided by your past educational or professional qualifications. Interviewer always wants to check what you have done in past 2-3 years, your dedication to work, your depth of knowledge, your problems solving skills and your ambitions and dreams for the future. If you did not have any professional experience, interviewer will check the depth of knowledge in your favorite subject, your efforts in your academic projects, your favorite teachers and your favorite personalities. Check for your marks right from the school days, percentages, subjects, teachers, school names and games / extra curricular activities that you have done.

13. Strength and Weaknesses

Self awareness is the major part of any personal interview. You must be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. You need to know the methods to control your weaknesses and effectively communicated to the interviewer. Your must always be aware of strengths and their potential you need to know what maximum you can do with those strengths. This communication becomes most attractive when you demonstrate strengths and weaknesses with live examples of your life.

14. Entrepreneurship

Mostly interviewer with rich experience of running a self business will ask questions about entrepreneurship. They want to check your ability to start your own business or successfully join the family business. They will check your financial knowledge about arranging the money for the business and running a profitable business. They will also check your market reading, financial knowledge and man management skills.

15. Anxiety and Uncomfortable ness:

Uncomfortable behavior and anxiety is the result of no preparation. The student who has less time to prepare due to their examinations or work pressure will behave like this. Only solution is the full preparation for personal interview. This can be done by the help of family and friends who have background in management education. You need to prepare for the most possible questions and their solutions. Good social and family background helps in this a lot. A social animal who mines everyone easily have more possibility of preparing in left time.

Most of the time student becomes uncomfortable when interviewer asks them about their families or salaries. In an interview, interviewer asked, what is your salary? To an MCA girl working in top IT Company and said that it’s optional to answer this question. You have to answer it strength forward or respectfully deny answering this question. Selecting the middle path will not be comfortable for interviewers. The girl answered that they are paying me a handsome salary. This type of answers hurt the interviewer. You can straight say no for such type of questions. I think that will be the correct way.

Young Students Full Energy

In last 8 years, while teaching in higher education i have seen many youngsters. The coming generation which is called as iPhone generation is really full of energy. Since last decade the courses, format of the courses and the way syllabus has taught has changed a lot. I remember we use to have yearly pattern for my graudation course, now even for undergraduation courses students have to face semester wise pattern.

Besides studies now students do social work and have enjoyment in the social life. The recent surge in the social networking website and innovation at the college level is the demonstration of that trend.

Google Nexus One

I dont know, why americans like this One. Air Force One Nexus One.....etc. Even though Zero '0' comes even before that.

Bye the way phone is amazing but comparing the features, i dint see it as the iPhone Killer. Even i am the Google fan because its products are really innovative. Google says where phone meets web. Particularly i like the features like voice to text and voice directions while driving (Must be for US and Europe only). compatability of nexus one with other Google products is great. May be Google products will pick this phone in the market. It has two advantages over iPhone 1. Seems not so commercial as iPhone where you have buy lot of stuff from iTunes.(Android is Open Source). 2. It has backing of dozens of Google innovative products. One last thing its slimmer compared to iPhone.
I think Nexus One is two way sword, now they have announce that they will give special importance to the Business Phone (Means they will release another version specially for use in business). What that means.... hahha means targeting BlackBerry and iPhone both.....???

Here is the video of Nexus One.....

How to talk to your Professor

Farooqui N.K.

As students, you have to talk to your professor (Teacher, Lecturer, Assistant professor or Associate professor) on different issues. Here are the steps to talk to him comfortably and come out with good results.

Step 1: Be clear on your objective.

When you decided to meet your professor outside the class, you should have a clear-cut objective in your mind, as why you want to meet. Mostly student meet just to build a personal rappo or show that they are very serious about the studies, which results in bad influence. Talk sensibly and effectively in short words.

Step 2: See the availability.

Mostly professors are busy with other works which students are not aware of. Better if you check his time table on website or on the notice board before you land in front of his cabin in a building located at distance place. Depending upon the work and time required to complete that work, you can go to that professor with prior permission.

Step 3: Be Ready with the documents.

Mostly, you have to come with documents ready to prove what you are saying. For example during some educational discussion you will require books.

Sometimes, if the professor is busy with some other guest or students, you have some material or an iPod with you so that you can effectively use your time.

Do not discuss any point without reading the material or carrying the material, because most of the time professor is already aware of all those things.

Step 4: Do not meet professor after class for important things.

Students try to solve their problems outside the class as soon as class ends. This is the time when your professor is tired and do not want to discuss anything. In case you have some important issue and needs discussion in alone and peaceful environment, preferably discuss that in professor’s cabin.

Step 5: Build a personal rapport.

After some months, professor will build your profile depending on your habits and behavior. You should try to build this profile good and positive. This profile will help you get good marks & job after the course. Good manners and positive attitude towards your professor helps in making good profile.

Step 6: Your Professor is not the master of all things

While asking the questions, be aware of the specialization of the professor. Do not any question which doesn’t relate to him. Because, one person can not be the master of all. Accurate questions, point to point talk and remaining in circle with good manners help student to solve his problems quickly and easily.

Step 7: Professor forget easily.

While going to the professor, do not offensive if he says ‘I dint remember you’. Which batch you belong to. It’s easy for a professor to forget. The professors are known for that. Be ready to introduce yourself many times in a semester, be ready with documents and ID, be ready with the documents required to discuss the point.

Step 8: Do not meet to extend the deadlines

Project, seminar and technical report submission are critical issues. Never meet to the professor with the request to extend the deadline. The project evaluation which follows the project submission delays, in case students delays the submission. This will create difficult situation for professor and examination department. Be careful, otherwise you will loose your good profile.

Step 9: Dealing with difficult professors

Professor is nothing but other human being. Try to read your professor, his likes, and his dislikes, which students he considered best, which type of students he considered bad. It depends on his personality. You need to do what he wants from you in the subject. Even if the syllabus is defined and examinations are taken by university, every professor has his own style of teaching and taking examinations. You need to obey that style.

Step 10: Personal Advice

Your professor is the best person who can guide for your career. The reason is that during teaching and evaluation he can see your positives and negatives. As he has seen many such students, he can be the best person to guide about your career.
